Detection of Gravitational Waves: Scientific breakthrough of our time

25 Feb 2019

Scientists have officially announced that they have now detected Gravitational waves successfully. The announcement was made on Thursday following a thorough study of two black holes merging with each other. The violent merging of the black holes in deep space resulted in huge gravitational waves, which one could never have imagined. The detection of the Gravitational waves now proves a lot of ideas that Albert Einstein put through with his theory of relativity, might very well be true.

Experts all over the have acclaimed the detection of gravitational waves as the scientific triumph of the time. The detection will now prove to be the key to all the secrets that can be unlocked using Albert Einstein’s Theory of Relativity.

The detection of the gravitational waves will also bring about more refined and directive path to astronomical studies. With better study of the gravitational waves, we will be able to unlock quite a few mysteries of the world that has till date lay hidden. The announcement regarding the detection of the gravitational waves was done at a news briefing at the National Press Club in Washington.

David Reitze, executive director of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory started off with the words, “Ladies and gentlemen, we have detected gravitational waves. We did it!”

Many Scientists from all over the world have worked hard to bring LIGO where it is now. With the successful detection of the Gravitational waves, the scientists believe that their hard work has at last paid off.

LIGO is possibly one of the most accurate devices ever built to measure waves. The National Science Foundation has spent approximately $1.1 billion, in the construction of LIGO over several decades. The paper published declaring the detection of the gravitational waves has a staggering 1004 authors, which goes to show how many scientists have worked hard to achieve the feat.
