Organ transplant acts a life saving measure for quite a few individuals, but a recent study shows that individuals with solid organ transplants also have a higher tendency of having cancer during the later stages of their lives. The recent study shows that individuals with solid organ transplants have a pretty high chance of dying with cancer when compared to the general class of individuals.

The situation can be considered grave as in these cases; the fatality rates are very high making solid organ transplant quite a big decision to make from now on.

According to the researchers at the University of Toronto, the increased risk of suffering from cancer was seen in most of the individuals with solid organ transplants. This is regardless of the organ that has been transplanted, which makes things even me worse. They also added that more study in this regard is required in order to perfectly analyze the situation and then work out the steps to proceed.

According to the report of the study, “Despite the fact that Solid Organ Transplant Recipients have shorter life expectancies and a higher risk of dying of non-cancer-related causes, these patients have an elevated risk of cancer death as compared with the general population. Addressing the cancer burden in SOTRs is critical to improving the survival of these patients.”

The research also shows that the cancers that the transplant patients come up with are not one of the most aggressive forms, but certainly the end result is deaths. This needs to be avoided if the acts of transplant have to be made successful in reality.

According to the statistics of the research, approximately 11,000 individuals received an organ transplant during the period from 1991 to 2010. The transplanted organs include kidney, heart, liver, etc., over the period of 20 years. Amidst the 11,000 approximate individuals, 3068 people have died in the period of 20 years.

What is more interesting is that amidst all the deaths, approximately 20% of the deaths have been caused by cancer. The tendency to have cancer is way more in children, when compared to middle individuals and people over the age of 60.

The doctors have done a great job by extending the lives of individuals via the transplants, but it is probably the time to take the next step.
