Before Marshmallow, Sony Xperia C5 Ultra (C4 too) receives Android 5.1 update

25 Feb 2019

Sony’s recent Xperia C5 Ultra smartphone is receiving an Android firmware update, not version 6.0 Marshmallow as you expect – it’s Android 5.1 Lollipop update. Last year, Sony had released a list of devices which will get the Marshmallow software update, where they also said that to ease out the process, they will be first getting the Android 5.1 update first – instead of jumping from 5.0 to 6.0 directly.

However, Sony Xperia C5 Ultra wasn’t there in the list, it was supposed to get the Android 6.0 update directly from Android 5.0. There wasn’t any official Android 5.1 plan for this phone, surprisingly, they did it. One more device which has got the same treatment as this phone is Sony Xperia C4, which also started to receive a similar update since last 2 days.

These are the 6 devices from Sony which were supposed to jump from Android 5.0 to Marshmallow – Xperia Z3+, Xperia Z4 Tablet, Xperia C4, Xperia C5 Ultra, Xperia M4 Aqua, and Xperia M5.

Coming back to the topic, all variants of Xperia C5 Ultra are getting the software update this time – dual-SIM models E5533, E5563 and single-SIM models E5553, E5506 are being updated. Single-SIM Xperia C5 Ultra is being updated to build number 29.1.A.0.87, while the dual-SIM model is being updated to build number 29.1.B.0.87.

The company is rolling out this firmware in many stages, so it may take a few hours or days to reach all of these smartphones. Before starting downloading and installing the update, make sure you have a stable WiFi connection, backup of contacts and data (for a safety) as well as a 70-80 percent charged battery at least.

Now, some Xperia C5 users are concerned about the Marshmallow update to these phones, as they think that this smaller Lollipop update would further delay the Marshmallow treat.
