Upon disconnection, fluid is pushed out of the lumen to control blood reflux that has occurred. However, neutral fluid displacement connectors prevent blood reflux upon connection and disconnection. A specialized neutral displacement connector has cupped silicone membrane with a slit that acts as a valve. The valve automatically closes once the fluid container becomes empty, this prevents the blood reflux. In terms of market size, positive fluid displacement catheters dominated the market in the year 2016 due to the low cost of the products.
