During the last decade global availability of pepper has increased substantially. There are three types of pepper, black, white and green. The two main types of pepper sold are black and white. Black peppercorns are dried ripe berries of the Piper nigrum plant and white peppercorns that are dehusked berries. Green pepper are preserved in brine or vinegar and sometimes sold as a delicacy.

Worldwide, Vietnam is the largest producer of pepper accounting for more than 32% of total world production followed by India and Indonesia with about more than 15% share each. Pepper is known as the king of spices. Green, black and white peppercorns all come from the same plant. They grow in clusters such as grapes, and are harvested in variety of stages of growth. Green peppercorns contain a mild flavor and are picked when they are very young. China is a pepper producing country but their domestic demand has surpassed their production ability during the past few years, therefore China has to rely on imports. India at times also needs to import pepper to meet their domestic needs. Globally, Vietnam, India and Indonesia are the leading producer of black pepper. Vietnam has benefited most from the growing market.

Rest of the World (RoW) is another lucrative market for pepper. Countries such as Egypt, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, and United Arab Emirates among others provide huge market potential for the vendors. In 2014, Southeast Asia (SEA) was the major supplier of pepper to the Europe, accounted for more than 60% of the total imported volume.
