Toyota Motor Corp announced today that it is adding 331,200 more cars to the worldwide list of recalled vehicles involving potential Takata Corp’s airbag issues. With this addition, the total number of Toyota vehicles recalled over Takata airbag issue has been raised to 15,314,000 worldwide, including 3,156,000 in the United States.

Earlier on Wednesday, Toyota Motor Cop revealed that its expanding the list by adding 356,000 cars worldwide, but soon later lowered the figure to 331,200. These vehicles were equipped with a dual-stage front passenger airbag inflator manufactured by Takata Corp.

As of now, nearly 20 million vehicles affected by potentially problematic Takata airbag inflators have been recalled in the united states. The total number of faulty airbag inflators in these recalls may reach over 30 million. According to the reports, these faulty airbags can activate with the force much higher than what it designed to be, which could be harmful as it may burst the deadly metal shards towards the passenger compartment during the accidents.

In the fresh recalled vehicles, 198,000 are registered in the United States to make the total of 231,000 cars in North America. In the US, the vehicles included in the recall are the 2008 Corolla and Corolla Matrix models, 2008 to 2010 model years Lexus SC 430 vehicles.

86,000 European vehicles and 3,000 Japanese cars contribute the list, while 220 vehicles are recalled in Asia. In Europe, Avensis and Lexus SC430 models added to the recall and in Japan, Avensis and Lexus SC 430 models made from May 2007 to July 2010 have been recalled. Apart from these regions, Toyota is adding another 11,000 vehicles to the recalls, including Avensis, Corolla, Corolla Matrix and Lexus SC 430 models from other regions.

Meanwhile, U.S. auto safety regulators are said to be examining whether an additional 70 million to 90 million Takata airbag inflators should be recalled.
