The fastest growing Chinese smartphone-maker Xiaomi has just announced the release date of Mi Max large screen affordable smartphone and Mi Band 2 smartwatch. These new gadgets will be launched on May 10, 2016 along with its latest MIUI 8.

Two days ago, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun showed off Mi Max and Mi Band 2 on a live streaming broadcast, and as the icing on cake, he used Xiaomi’s own Mi Live app.

“Evolving from the first version in 2010, MIUI has served as the operating system for over 150 million across the globe,” a post on MIUI forum said. “On May 10, we will introduce you MIUI 8, with the features you always wanted and new designs beyond your imagination.”

As far as we know, Mi Max is a massive 6.4-inch phablet with a 1440 x 25560 QHD screen, Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 SoC, Xiaomi Rift SoC and Snapdragon 650 SoC (retrieved this info through the recent leaked benchmark test). This large screen affordable phone will be having a 2GB of RAM.

Since its first two versions of affordable fitness trackers – Mi Band 1 and Mi Band 1S, Xiaomi will also launch its successor, but with a twist – built-in display. Although Mi Band 2 sport a screen, users still have to pair it with a smartphone (iPhone or Android) for actual use with a health related app.

Coming to MIUI ROM from Xiaomi, it’s one of the most popular aftermarket Android custom ROMs available. The company claims that over 160 million users around the world use MIUI. Xiaomi chief has promised many new features, smooth functionality and best user experience with the new ROM. Xiaomi’s official MIUI YouTube channel also teased a brief intro of the MIUI 8 update. New “Notification Shade” introduced with the software is the highlight. Rumors suggest that the company will also be launching a cloud music app during the launch event on May 10.

Still, there are no mentions of the Android version from which this firmware is built, whether its Android 6.0 Marshmallow or older version. As the latest Android N update will be launched in June-July, its unlikely to be incorporated in MIUI 8 for now. For your information – the current latest MIUI 7.1 is based on years-old Android 4.4 KitKat only. So, don’t be surprised if the company uses Android 5.1 Lollipop (or earlier) firmware to build the latest MIUI update.
