Fly ash is a type of pozzolan formed by the burning of pulverised coal. The fly ash is a fine amorphous powder, rich in alumina and silica generated through separation methods such as electrostatic, mechanical etc. The fly ash is a predominant material in the construction industry and used as an admixture. The quality and properties of fly ash varies depending upon the nature of coal and coal combustion processes. Fly ash is of two type, type F and C wherein the major difference lies in the lime content. For instance, type F are low in lime content (<15%) and type C with high lime content (>15%). Fly ash is widely used as a raw materials for bricks, portland cement and engineering fills among others. The global fly ash market is expected to surge at a significant CAGR during the forecast period owing to the growth in infrastructural developments across the globe.

The global fly ash market is geographically segmented into North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia Pacific, and Middle East & Africa (MEA). The fly ash market in the Americas is matured, wherein its use in production of hydraulic cement is dominant. Furthermore, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) encourages the use of fly ash to reduce the virgin resource usage, to limit the greenhouse emissions, to improve durability and strength of construction and reduction in the disposal cost of ash. The Asia Pacific fly ash market is expected to cater a high demand owing to the rise in industrialization and development towards raising the standard of living with countries such as China and India to account major share. However, the tax reform (GST) in India which rolled out in early July 2017 has led towards increase in the prices of construction materials, with 12% GST rate on fly ash bricks. This transformation affects the construction industry in the country to some extent. Overall, the global fly ash market is expected to mark a significant growth both in terms of value and volume during the forecast period owing to its characteristic performance. Some of the prominent players present in this market are Boral Limited, Headwaters Inc., Cemex S.A.B. De C.V., Lafarge North America Inc., and Charah Inc.

Overall, the research study provides a holistic view of the global fly ash market, offering market size and estimates for the period from 2017 to 2025, keeping in mind the above mentioned factors.

Fly ash on the basis of coal combustion is classified into classes: class C and class F. The class C fly ashes are produced owing to buring of subbutiminous coal or lignite. The class F fly ashes are generated normally due to combustion of bituminous coal or anthracite. Class F, owing to its pozzolanic nature and low content of lime (CaO) is widely use in portland cement where it is used in high strength mixes and mass concrete. Furthermore, rising demand for cement and cementitious materials from the construction sectors is stimulating the market growth. Class F accounted for the largest share of the global market and is projected to witness fastest growth over the forecast period 2017 to 2025.

Due to high content of lime, class C fly ashes are use in both pozzolanic and cementitious reaction during the hydration process. Therefore, they are classified as cementitious and pozzolanic additives. This segment is projected to witness moderate growth over the forecast period.

In 2016, the global fly ash market by application was led by cement segment accounting for 39.92% share in terms of revenue. Utilization of fly ash in manufacturing building materials is growing significantly owing to its increasing availability and its ability to reduce clinker consumption and bring down emission of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Furthermore, rising awareness and legislation on environmental issues would enable cement industry to utilize fly ash not only in production of cement but also as a constituent it in raw-meal in production of clinker wherever possible.

Roads and embankments and bricks are the two most attractive segment for fly ash. Both, these segments is projected to witness significant growth over the forecast period of 2017 to 2025. This growth is attributed to economic growth, increased investment in infrastructure projects, and industrialization in emerging economies.

In 2016, Asia Pacific accounted for two third share of the global fly ash market and projected to maintain its lead over the forecast period of 2017 to 2025. The market is also projected to witness significant growth over the forecast period. China and India are chief contributors towards this growth. Owing to steady economic growth, construction activities have increased, thus leading to rising demand for fly ash. Since, 2008 China generates more than 50.0% fly ash volume globally and its utilization has been steadily increased more than 65.0% which is higher when compare to the global average (55%).

Asia Pacific was followed by Europe and North America. North America is another attractive market for fly ash owing to increasing consumption of cement and cementitious materials from the construction sector. In the Middle East & Africa region owing to large scale investment in infrastructure projects, mostly related to transport, is major factor driving the rapid growth of fly ash in the region.
