Hematoxylin is a natural black 1, or C.I. 75290 colored compound extracted from the wood of the logwood tree. When oxidized it forms haematein, a compound with rich blue-purple color, and is used with a suitable mordant such as Fe (III) or Al (III) salts, to stain cell nuclei prior, before testing under a microscope. Structures that stain with hematoxylin are called basophilic.

Global hematoxylin market is segmented on the basis of type such as alum hematoxylin, iron hematoxylin, tungsten hematoxylin, lead hematoxylin and others. In 2016, alum hematoxylin segment was observed to be the largest segment by type in global hematoxylin market and projected to maintain its dominance during the forecast period of 2017-2025. Rising demand for hematoxylin and eosin (H and E) staining is expected to fuel the growth of the segment over the forecast period. Iron hematoxylin is anticipated to be the fastest growing segment in global hematoxylin market and anticipated to grow at the CAGR of 7.4% over the forecast period (2017-2025).

On the basis of application type, the global hematoxylin market is segmented into laboratories and textiles. In 2016, laboratories was observed to be the largest application segment in global hematoxylin market and is projected to maintain its dominance during the forecast period of 2017-2025. Rising demand for dye in laboratories for histology, histochemistry, histopathology and cytology is anticipated to fuel the growth of this segment over the forecast period. Textile segment is expected to be the fastest growing segment at a CAGR of 7.9% over the next six years.

The global hematoxylin market by geography is segmented as North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America and Middle East and Africa. In 2016, North America was observed to be the largest market with 42.20% revenue share in the global market. The region is projected to grow at a significant CAGR of 7.4% during the forecast period. However, the North America market has become matured and its growth is anticipated to lose 90 basis points (Bps) by 2025. Asia Pacific is anticipated to be the fastest growing regional market and is anticipated to grow at a CAGR of 8.2% over the forecast period (2017-2025). Europe is the second largest market and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 8.0% during the forecast period. The hematoxylin market in Europe is anticipated to reach value of US$ 778.35 Mn by 2025. Middle East and Africa was the smallest market for hematoxylin in 2016 accounting for about 3.78% revenue share in global market due economic slowdown in the region as result of low crude oil prices. The region is anticipated to lose 36 basis points by 2025.

Overall, the research study provides a holistic view of the global hematoxylin market, offering market size and estimates for the period from 2017 to 2025, keeping in mind the above mentioned factors.

The global hematoxylin market can be categorized on the basis of type as:

  • Alum Hematoxylin
  • Iron hematoxylin
  • Tungsten hematoxylin
  • Others (molybdenum, lead & others)

In 2016, alum hematoxylin type of hematoxylin was the largest segment in terms of revenue. In 2016, the segment accounted for US$ 537.45 Mn demand for hematoxylin and is expected to reach more than US$ 900.0 Mn in 2025. Alum hematoxylin are mostly used to demonstrate nuclear morphology; such solutions generally contain hematoxylin and an alum. To produce an effective nuclear staining alum hematoxylin, three items needed namely hematein or hematoxylin; as dye, an aluminum salt; as mordant and a solvent. Iron hematoxylin stain allows to make a permanent stained slide for quantitating and detecting parasitic organisms. Iron hematoxylin is the stain mainly used for the original morphological descriptions of intestinal protozoa which are found in humans. Iron hematoxylin staining methods can be used with either fresh, PVA-preserved or SAF-preserved specimens.

Ehrlich's hematoxylin, Harris hematoxylin, Mayer's haemalum and Cole's hematoxylin are basic types of alum hematoxylin solutions whereas Heidenhain's iron hematoxylin, Weigert's iron hematoxylin, Verhoeff's iron hematoxylin and Celestine blue-haemalum are types of iron hematoxylin solutions.

The global hematoxylin market can be categorized on the basis of application as:

  • Laboratories (histology, histochemistry, histopathology and in cytology)
  • Textile

The natural dye, hematoxylin is obtained from the logwood, haematoxylon campechianum is used in histology, histopathology, histochemistry, and in cytology. Hematoxylin is the most used dye in histopathology and cytology for the diagnosis of non-malignant and malignant lesions. Hematoxylin is extensively used in the demonstration of certain carbohydrates, parasites, lipids, nucleic acids, connective tissue fibers, metals, and in immunohistochemistry. It is also used in the demonstration of several intracellular substances such as chromosomes, mitochondria, centrioles, chromatin, nucleoli, nuclear membrane, cross striations of muscle fibers, ground cytoplasm and chromatin granules in several staining techniques. To a lesser extent, hematoxylin is used in textile industry due to its strong staining properties to efficiently dye nylon, silk, and wool. In 2016, this segment accounted for 1.36% share of global hematoxylin demand.

In 2016, laboratories application use of hematoxylin was the largest segment in terms of revenue. In 2016, the segment accounted for 98.64% market share with revenue demand of US$ 1,511.87 Mn for hematoxylin.

In 2016, North America accounted for 42.20% share of the global market and is projected to maintain its dominance over the next six years. This growth has been attributed primarily to the rising prevalence of various diseases and favorable government policies. However, the market for North America is mature, and therefore, the market in this region is projected to grow at a moderate CAGR of 7.4% over the forecast period. Europe is projected to be the second largest market and accounted for more than 20.00% share of the market. This region is witnessing growth owing to rising awareness of patients, especially in Western European countries.

Asia Pacific market is projected to witness highest growth over the forecast period due to increasing geriatric population base, coupled with rise in disposable income and consumer awareness and presence of accessible healthcare infrastructure. Middle East & Africa and Latin America regions are projected to witness below average growth rate over the forecast period as these regions are relatively less explored.
